What is Reiki (pronounced ray-key) and how can it help?
Reiki is a powerful, holistic and non-invasive therapy that has a profoundly calming effect. The benefits of just one session may be felt for several days and the frequency of treatments depends on the client’s individual needs.
Reiki is a Japanese term that has no corresponding word in English. The closest translation of its meaning would be ‘universal life energy’. It was originated and developed in Japan by Dr Mikao Usui, who was born in 1865. He travelled and taught extensively throughout Japan, Europe, America and China. Over the years, Reiki steadily evolved throughout Japan, China and Tibet. However, it wasn’t until 1937 that it was finally introduced to the West.
The Reiki Mantra of Dr Mikao Usui
Just for today, I will let go of anger
Just for today, I will let go of worry
Just for today, I will give thanks for many blessings
Just for today, I will do my work honestly
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and to every living thing
We are alive because a life force is constantly flowing through us. This life force flows within our physical body through energy lines or pathways called chakras, meridians and nadis. It also flows around us in a field of energy called the aura. Life force is the very essence of life and it nourishes the organs and cells of the body, supporting them in their vital functions. When this flow of life force is disrupted, it causes diminished function in one or more of the organs and in the tissues of the physical body.
The life force is responsive to our thoughts and feelings. It becomes disrupted when we accept, either consciously or unconsciously, negative thoughts or feelings about ourselves. These negative thoughts and feelings become attached to the energy field and cause a disruption in the flow of the life force. This impairs the normal vital functions of the organs and cells of our physical body, causing us to feel unwell, to lack energy and to generally feel a bit down.
This can be caused by negative life experiences, including: worry, stress, the pressures of modern living, poor relationships with friends, colleagues or loved ones, childhood traumas, separation and divorce, bereavement and serious illness.
Very simply, Reiki heals by flowing through the affected parts of the energy field and charging them with positive energy. It raises the vibration level of the energy field in and around the physical body where the negative thoughts and feelings are attached. This causes the negative energy to disperse and fall away. By doing this, Reiki clears, straightens and heals the energy pathways, allowing the life force to flow in a healthy and natural way.
Reiki is now widely recognised by many NHS Trusts as a very effective and highly beneficial treatment for a wide range of conditions. It is particularly beneficial when used in conjunction with conventional medicine and healthcare.
Like electricity, you can’t see it, touch it, smell it, taste it, or hear it, but you know it’s very powerful and it really works!
